On April 12th, the National Association of Real Estate Brokers (NAREB) hosted their 2nd Annual Building Black Wealth Day. In over 100 cities across the country, communities gathered for practical wealth building sessions. Churches, libraries and community centers from Seattle, Washington all the way to Tampa, Florida opened their doors for people of all ages to engage in workshops with wealth experts.
I was honored to serve as a panelist for Annual Building Black Wealth Day at Reid Temple AME church in Glenn Dale, Maryland to provide wealth building tips from an estate planner’s perspective.
The conversation about wealth is crucial in our community and especially in the DC, Maryland and Virginia area as federal workers continue to face mass layoffs. During the panel, I used scenarios to paint a picture of the importance of creating intergenerational wealth through estate planning. Take a moment to watch the session (39:00).
I’ve been doing this line of work for over 35 years. There’s nothing I’m more passionate about than making sure no wealth gets lost in the transition of a loved one. If I can help you plan early and effectively then everyone can be wealthier.
Key takeaways from the panel to build generational wealth:
- You can avoid having to go to court to transfer title to a Decedent’s assets if you have a Revocable Living Trust;
- You can outline instructions in your Trust so your money is distributed the way you want;
- The earlier you begin planning the sooner your wealth can be secured; and
- Every adult needs to have at least a Last Will and Testament, Power of Attorney and Medical Directive.
After the panel, it was beautiful to witness the exchange of knowledge between attendees, panelists and the event’s hosts. We shared resources, engaged in workshops and most importantly, we shared opportunities with each other.
I also loved providing free consultations to help folks jumpstart their estate planning. If you’re interested in a free meeting with an estate planning attorney, email me at appointments@willsandtrusts.net.
Lastly, one moment that stood out to me during the Q&A session was a young lady who asked how we can leave these sessions feeling more empowered. Charisse Callender-Scott responded with distinction and said “If you really receive everything that was shared in here today you should be inspired to know that the information and the knowledge is to continue to propel us forward.”
I’ll say the same — I urge you to let this information fuel you! Digest what you read and take the steps to build wealth. This matters for you today and the generations to come.
